Mr Sudheer Karlakki

FRCS (Ed), FRCS (G), FRCS (Orth), MSc (Orth Eng)

I have been a consultant Hip and Knee Arthroplasty Specialist based at Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, Oswestry since 2003.

My collective clinical throughput exceeds over 350 primary hip and knee replacements, over 50 revision surgeries and roughly 50 hip arthroscopies a year.

I specialise in young hip disorders, hip impingement and hip arthroscopies in addition to knee arthroscopies, primary, complex primary, revision hip and revision knee surgeries.

I graduated from St John’s Medical College, Bangalore in 1992. Following which my basic surgical training was at Cardiff and Newport in South Wales. After FRCS I entered the Welsh Orthopaedic Training Programme and most of my orthopaedic training was based around renowned Oswestry Orthopaedic Hospital. During this time I also completed a Masters degree in Orthopaedic Engineering from the Cardiff University.

I developed an interest in knee and hip arthroplasty during my training and spent the last 2 years of my training focusing on Hip and Knee Arthroplasty, a year at Oswestry and a year of Surgical Fellowship at The Wrightington Hospital regarded by most as the birthplace of hip replacement. I later spent time in Canada visiting various arthroplasty centres and undertook an AO Pelvic Fellowship at Sunnnybrook hospital at Toronto. I have travelled extensively during my training and subsequently visiting several renowned centres both in the UK and outside.

I am actively involved in research. I have publications in peer reviewed journals. My research interests are mainly in the field of ‘making surgery predictable’ by developing accurate surgical jigs and reproducible surgical techniques minimising blood loss and optimising wound healing following surgery.

Personal profile

I have 2 children. I am a keen follower of motorsports. I enjoy travelling, food, cycling, walking, skiing, paragliding and riding motorcycles. I play cricket and play golf time permitting.
